Chanteuse, pianiste, auteure, compositrice, élevée sur les routes et sur les traces d’un père musicien, sa musique, une espèce de jazz folk pop élégante, aurait mystérieusement vu le jour entre Paris, New York et Erevan. Pianiste au toucher délicat, de solide formation classique, diplômée de l’Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, c’est en quittant Paris pour New York en 2005 que Macha Gharibian se révèle à elle-même. Guidée par Ralph Alessi, Uri Caine, Jason Moran, Ravi Coltrane à la School for Improvisational Music, elle commence à écrire et créer son univers,une musique construite par ses voyages, ses désirs, ses racines et tout ce qui a fait grandir la jeune femme partagée entre trois cultures : arménienne de ses ancêtres, parisienne de coeur et new-yorkaise d’adoption.

She’s a singer, pianist, author, composer, raised on the streets and following in the footsteps of her musician father. Her music, a sort of elegant jazz folk pop mix, has mysteriously seen the light of day somewhere between Paris, New York and Erevan. A pianist with a delicate touch, with a classical background, it was only upon leaving Paris for New York in 2005 that Macha Gharibian found herself. Guided by Ralph Alessi, Uri Caine, Jason Moran, Ravi Coltrane at the School for Improvisational Music, she started to write and create her universe, music made up of her travels, her desires, her roots and everything that characterises this young woman who grew up divided between three cultures: Armenian ancestors, a Parisian heart and a New Yorker by adoption. For the festival’s opening concert, she will present her premiere of “Joy Ascencion”, her 3rd album, before its official release at the end of January.

Haar muziek, een soort elegante jazz-folk-pop, zou zich op mysterieuze wijze hebben ontwikkeld tussen Parijs, New York en Erevan. Als fijngevoelige pianiste met een gedegen klassieke vorming ontdekt ze haar ware muzikale persoonlijkheid na in 2005 Parijs te hebben ingeruild voor New York. Onder het toeziend oog van Ralph Alessi, Uri Caine, Jason Moran en Ravi Coltrane van de School for Improvisational Music schrijft ze voor het eerst eigen composities. Zo creëert ze een heel eigen wereld geïnspireerd door haar reizen, verlangens, wortels en vooral door haar ervaringen als jonge vrouw, schipperend tussen drie culturen: de Armeense omwille van haar voorouders, de Franse vanwege haar liefde voor Parijs, en de Amerikaanse als New yorker in hart en ziel. Als festivalopener presenteert ze in avant-première haar derde album « Joy Ascencion », nog vóór de officiële lancering ervan eind januari.

Depuis 2006, le Jazz Station Big Band est résident de la Jazz Station. Devenu véritable acteur de la scène belge, le groupe a développé un son totalement unique. Le JSBB est composé de treize solistes hors-pairs, parmi lesquels se trouvent ses propres arrangeurs. Dans le cadre de ce festival, ils revisiteront avec brio le répertoire du grand Charles Mingus.

Sal La Rocca est incontestablement un des meilleurs contrebassistes du pays et plus encore. Celui qui a accompagné Steve Grossman et Lee Konitz entre autres a eu nombre de musiciens fantastiques à ses côtés. Le gaillard au bandana sait s’entourer : une rythmique de rêve avec Jeroen van Herzeele au sax et Lieven Venken à la batterie. Au Wurlitzer, Pascal Mohy amène une fraîcheur et un groove uniques. La musique est libertaire, entre standards et compositions, l’influence de Coltrane est se transparaît. Folie, liberté, la cohésion est visible et la musique est bonne. Or Bareket est l’un des bassistes les plus demandés de sa génération, depuis son arrivée à New York il y a près de dix ans. Or Bareket is still one of the greatest bass players of his generation, since his arrival in New York six years ago. His rhythmic dexterity, his fluid lyricism and his sense of rhythm all turn him into a highly demanded sideman on the world stage. At first a collaborator on many projects, he knew how to develop naturally as a composer and manage his own groups. He forged his own coherent personal aesthetic, inspired by folklore from his ancestors (his grandparents are from Tangier, Baghdad, Buenos Aires and Eastern Europe), which he joyfully combines with his profound knowledge of jazz and classical Western music. Ces histoires de talents d’exception découverts dès leur plus jeune âge sont sans doute de mise dans le cas du violoniste Alexandre Cavaliere. A 12 ans, il s’impose au violon aux Django d’Or, à Bruxelles. Il y fait grande impression sur Didier Lockwood et Babik Reinhardt qui l’invitent directement à Paris, insufflant à sa carrière un départ fulgurant. Ensuite, tout s’enchaîne naturellement. Alexandre écume les scènes internationales avec le groupe de son père et collectionne une liste impressionnante de prestations. Aujourd’hui, il nous revient magnifiquement accompagné avec un nouveau projet, qui mélange la musique manouche chère à son cœur (le gypsy jazz dans le style de Django Reinhardt) à l’idiome be-bop et le jazz moderne en passant par des influences comme Dorado Schmitt, ou encore Biréli Lagrène.

The classic story of an exceptional talent discovered at a young age is certainly applicable to the violinist Alexandre Cavaliere. At 12 years old, he played the violin at Django d’Or, in Brussels. He made a serious impression on Didier Lockwood and Babik Reinhardt who invited him to join them in Paris straight away, getting his career off to a brilliant start. Then, everything came naturally. Alexandre took the international stages by storm with his father’s band and built up an impressive list of performances. Today, he is returning with a new project which combines gypsy music that is close to his heart (gypsy jazz in the Django Reinhardt style) with a be-bop idiom and modern jazz as well as touches of influence from the likes of Dorado Schmitt and Biréli Lagrène.

Verhalen over op prille leeftijd ontdekte muzikale genieën zijn ongetwijfeld toepasselijk op violonist Alexandre Cavaliere. Reeds op 12-jarige leeftijd valt hij op tijdens de Django d’Or in Brussel. Didier Lockwood en Babik Reinhardt zijn erg onder de indruk en nodigen hem op staande voet uit om naar Parijs te reizen waar ze hem een bloeiende carrière helpen opbouwen. La chanteuse germano-afghane Simin Tander enchante par la richesse du son et l'intensité de sa musique d'inspiration mystique, avec laquelle elle trace un chemin vers son héritage moyen-oriental et un sillon dans les tréfonds de son âme.
Après deux albums et des concerts internationaux avec son quartet hollandais, sa collaboration mondiale avec le pianiste Tord Gustavsen et son album "What was said", paru chez ECM Records (Prix annuel de la critique allemande du disque), ce concert sera la première en Belgique de son nouveau quatuor et promet d'être une expérience sensible à part entière.

In the past, Stéphane Galland worked with big names like Ibrahim Maalouf, Zap Mama and Ozark Henry, and he also made it his business of working with the best musicians from different cultures – from India across the Balkans to Africa. But the drummer is without a doubt most famous as a founding member of Aka Moon, one of the most talked-about jazz bands in Belgian music history. Galland is celebrating his fiftieth birthday this year, but his sound is still ageless. Over the years he has developed his own unique rhythmic approach by connecting the different musical traditions in which he has worked.
Stéphane Galland werkte met Ibrahim Maalouf, Zap Mama, Ozark Henry en met vele andere topmuzikanten uit allerlei culturen, van India en Afrika tot de Balkan. Toch is deze drummer vooral gekend als stichtend lid van Aka Moon, een van de meest mythische jazzgroepen uit de Belgische muziekgeschiedenis. Stéphane Galland mag dan wel zijn vijftigste verjaardag hebben gevierd in 2019, het door hem gecreëerde geluid is tijdloos. In de loop der jaren ontwikkelde hij immers, door de combinatie van verschillende muzikale tradities, een unieke ritmische benadering.
